Book Review: Immortals Of Meluha

Share
‘#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER’ declares the blurb on the cover. Retelling a mythical tale, The Immortals of Meluha, has become the country’s bestselling novel ever. Even the author Amish Tripathy says that the book was a surprise hit. Categorized under fiction, the novel is a gripping tale that tells about the life of Lord Shiva, in a modern and enjoyable way. The Immortals of Meluha portrays Lord Shiva as a human, of flesh and blood.

Plot And Summary

Nandi is in Tibet, to take Shiva and his tribe (who are constantly in war with the neighbouring tribe) to the Land of Meluha. Shiva and his friend Veerbhadra find this as the right opportunity to save their tribe from the atrocities of the neighbouring tribe. They decide to become immigrants in the Land Of Meluha. They are astounded by the beauty and discipline of Meluha. Another thing that astounds them even more, is the fact that people in Meluha never get old, because of the somaras.
Shiva soon becomes a saviour who has come to save the suryavanshis from the deadly attacks of the chandravanshis. Shiva marries Sati and promises to bring an end to the atrocities of the chandravanshis who apparently have allied with the evil Nagas. Will he save the suryavanshis? For the answer to this question you will have to wait till the climax.
Even though many unbelievable instances, the Immortals of Meluha is the first of its kind and has opened up a new genre of writing for the Indian authors. Amish must certainly be praised for experimenting with such a unique, and at the same time a risky plot. Inspired by the success of the Immortals of Meluha many new authors have experimented with the genre, all though none has come up to it.

Conclusion

It took Amish about two years to find a publisher for his book. But his hard work has certainly paid off. The narrative style is excellent and instead of using the ancient, hard to follow English, Amish has used the most modern English. Amish has also taken care of not making the readers bored by attributing words like ‘thee’ or ‘thou’ to Shiva.
The book is certainly an exceptional one. And I suggest everyone must read the book. The Immortals of Meluha is the first part of the Shiva Trilogy. The second and third books of the trilogy are ‘Secrets of the Nagas and the ‘Oath of the Vayuputras’ respectively.
